We had a lovely dinner at the congregation tonight, which they do every month, but tonight it was special for the New Year Celebration. There was challah bread and wine on the table, in addition to slices of apples & honey to dip it in, said to help bring in a sweet new year :). One man talked about the significance of the holiday and something about God's grace and what kind of people we would be if we lived in constant thankfulness of His wonderful grace.. (something like that. I went in and out of listening... it takes so much energy to focus in hebrew!)
Anyway, tomorrow we plan to go to the beach by car, since most public transportation is closed. Then, sundown on saturday, we will begin preparing for the big breakfast party on Sunday morning, to invite a big group to celebrate the new year one day later so that they can be with families on the actual day. Jo and Dana are planning pancakes and crepes. They gave me the job of decorating the new year "tree" we put on the wall. I am also painting styrofoam apples to hang in front of the door. Both apples and pomegranates are representative of the new year and widely familiar this time of year.
I am very grateful to be among friends. I'm beginning to feel at home here. And I usually wake up so excited to be here in Israel. I enjoy the people here so much, as well as learning the language and culture.
Baruch Ata Adonai (Blessed are you, Lord)
